Over our Thanksgiving holiday break, room 162 was broken into by thieves. They stole 18 computers from our classroom and deflated much of our planned activities for the rest of this school year. Our district does not have the funds to replace the stolen computers, nor do we have insurance that would pay for replacement of our most valued learning tools.
They were not first class computers, mostly old Macs that were pieced together and made to do the jobs we needed them to do. They had dead batteries, missing keys, and sticky mice and trackpads. We had five different models of computers which were at least 4 years old.
But we had one for every student. And they used them everyday to blog, make movies and slideshows, and share and collaborate on assignments with each other and with our friends around the world.
We will continue to do many of these things with the computers we have left. We will get the duct tape out and mend the broken pieces that can be salvaged. The students of room 162 are up for the new challenges ahead and we are looking forward to sharing our learning in the new year with our friends.
