Taking a Step Backward

img_2417Over our Thanksgiving holiday break, room 162 was broken into by thieves. They stole 18 computers from our classroom and deflated much of our planned activities for the rest of this school year. Our district does not have the funds to replace the stolen computers, nor do we have insurance that would pay for replacement of our most valued learning tools.

They were not first class computers, mostly old Macs that were pieced together and made to do the jobs we needed them to do. They had dead batteries, missing keys, and sticky mice and trackpads. We had five different models of computers which were at least 4 years old.

But we had one for every student. And they used them everyday to blog, make movies and slideshows, and share and collaborate on assignments with each other and with our friends around the world.

We will continue to do many of these things with the computers we have left. We will get the duct tape out and mend the broken pieces that can be salvaged. The students of room 162 are up for the new challenges ahead and we are looking forward to sharing our learning in the new year with our friends.

  2. Hi Mr. Miller
here at SMS we had not too long ago had money stolen from us and I remember jsut how horrible everyone felt, but I can’t imagine how hard that must be for all of you, people truly are cruel sometimes. I’m very sorry to hear about your problem I hope the thieves will turn themselves or that someone will atleast help you raise the funds for new computers. Well good luck hopefully you can adjust for awhile without all the computers and hopefully nothing like this ever happens to you again.

  3. Hi, I’m Hannah from St. Mary’s in Minnesota.
That sounds horrible! We have a Mac lab at our school and no one has ever taken any of them, but we had 400$ stolen last year for birthright, and it stunk. I hope you’ll find a way to pay for new computers,
    Hannah

  4. Mr. Miller And Class,
That’s Terrible. It’s hard to believe that anybody would steal from a school, and that they would steal 18 computers. I hope you have better luck in the future.

  5. Wow that’s terrible! I can’t believe someone would do that, especially if they were Macs, I love those computers! Well I hope you can either get them back or somehow raise money to get some new ones.

  6. It’s so terrible that this had to happen to you guys, and I wish there were some way I could help. While it is a shame that you were robbed of your Macs, I smile at the thought of how little the thieves must have gotten for them; all that trouble and all they barely got anything out of it! Anyway, best of luck to you and your students.

  7. Thank you so much for all the kind words everyone. We greatly appreciate it! Although it was quite a shock, we’ve managed to keep moving forward and make do with what we have. The mess has been mostly cleaned up and I am fixing some older computers to get our number back up. We will be back to full-time blogging when we return from break in January. :-)

  8. Sorry to hear that sad story Mr. Miller. Your class is probably heart broken. :( I would be so sad. That was very rude of the thieves. That was your property. I hope you will get new computers this school year and have some more fun by the end of the year.

  22. Mr Miller and Room 162 – I am so sorry to hear about this… I am horrified that anyone could be so thoughtless. For the few dollars they probably get for your old computers, they have robbed you of many learning opportunities. Do keep blogging and let us know if we can help in anyway :)
