Blog Challenge #3 The Golden State

It’s time for blog challenge number three. For this challenge we were asked to introduce our readers to our home state and local area.

Our school is in King City. King City is located in Monterey County, California. We have many beautiful sights to see all around us. The city of Monterey is about a 45 minute drive to the west of King City. Monterey is home to an incredible aquarium. San Jose and Silicon Valley (made famous by many giant computer companies like Google and Apple) is a 90 minute drive to the north. San Francisco is about another 90 minutes beyond that. We have a National Monument just to the east of us called the Pinnacles. It is an ancient volcano that has been destroyed by an earthquake fault called the San Andreas. The Pinnacles are also home to the California Condor.

We live in a small agricultural community and are surrounded by farmland. We grow lots of crops like lettuce, onions, garlic, broccoli, and even grapes for wine. This area was made famous in books written by the American author named John Steinbeck.

You can take a look at our school from Google Earth. Our coordinates are 36°13′14.01″N and 121° 8′15.64″W

We have questions for some of our visitors from other countries. Can you help us out?

New Zealand: The Guinness Book of World Records say that you eat more ice cream than anyone else on the planet by person. Is this true?

Canada: Why is your hockey team so good!

Australia: Are you still having a very bad drought?

South Africa: Are you excited about the World Cup? We are!

Argentina: Will Argentina win the World Cup or do you think another team will?

Hong Kong: What is the most exciting thing to do in Hong Kong at night?

    Dear Mr Miller,
Thanks for commenting on my blog about the 4 square rules/guidelines. Most of the kids that are involved in the 4 square wrote about their 4 square rules.
It isn’t fun for anybody playing when people are teaming up on you.

    1. John Miller says:

      Hi Omer,
Glad you enjoyed the comment and thanks for visiting our class blog. I agree totally about the rules too.

Great challenge! I have a couple of questions for your students..
Aren’t you near a California Mission? And do you have any military bases near you?

I can’t wait to read more about what you are learning about California. What is the sport of choice around the neighborhood/community?

Great site Mr.Miller! Keep ‘em writing!

    Hi Mr Miller and Class,
We loved your quiz, but didn’t do too well! At least we learnt a few new things about California :) In Western Australia we will be having a total sprinkler ban this Winter to try and save water. Because the Summer has been so hot, our dams are very low and everyone is trying to save water where they can.
We love your blog and will be visiting again soon!
    Mrs Turvey and class :)

    Hey Mr. Miller!
I think that Canada has a really good team because we invented the sport. People in my class always come to me when they have a question in hockey. I love hockey and have been playing ice hockey since I was three years old. Maybe our team just has a bigger love for the sport. I’m not trying to start a fight or anything but it might be true. But look at it this way. You kick Canada at a lot of sports like baseball, Nascar, and football! So were both better at different sports:). Although in the Olympics you gave Canada a heck of a fight! You guys also had a great team! Zach Parise had that goal with only 24.4 seconds left in the third period! In my opinion Parise might be as good as Crosby! You guys also had Ryan Miller and Patrick Kane! Miller is the best goalie in the league by a mile! That’s something you should be very proud of. If you have any questions here is my post http://dannyh4.edublogs.org/2010/01/12/olympic-hockey/

    1. John Miller says:

      Hi Danny,
Thanks for the great comment and I agree with you 100%. I love Olympic hockey because it is so competitive. Like the World Cup in soccer, it’s the ultimate all star game and the gold medal game was brilliant. I am a Sharks fan (San Jose is about 90 minutes from here) and get to a game once in awhile. I also agree that Miller is from another planet. The same one that created Gretzky and Roy. Canada did an outstanding job with the Olympics and your winter athletes proved that they may be the best on this planet. (I’ll cross post this comment on your page too)

  9. Mrs Bird says:

    Hi class and Mr Miller
Maybe I can answer your question about Australia, but only for my state, Victoria. The drought has broken and we have had enough rain for water restrictions to be eased a little. Other states like Queensland have had dreadful floods! Pity it is too far away to pipe water to us!
How about you – do you have problems with extreme weather?
    Mrs Bird

    1. John Miller says:

      Hi Mrs. Bird,
Thanks for the comment. We are just getting out of a moderate drought. We’ve finally had a good deal of rain this winter. We only get winter rains here, usually from December through March. The rest of the year is usually dry. Good to hear that your conditions are improving.

  10. Danielmc4 says:

I had no idea that he ate the most ice-cream. I eat about 8,9 or 10 cones a month. Where we live we have our own brand of ice-cream it’s called Kapiti ice-cream.

    1. John Miller says:

You are lucky Daniel. It is hard to find good, local ice cream here. It is all made by big companies. I prefer the homemade kind – especially on a hot summer night!

  11. msbee says:

Wow! You have inspired the Super 7 New Scoopers with a real scoop! Do we really eat more ice cream than anyone else on the planet? We will survey our team and see what trend that suggests! Perhaps you could also ask the same questions at your end and we can compare out results?

This group will be away at camp next week but can hopefully get their data up before they go.

We really enjoy reading your blog!

  12. Miss T says:

Hmm maybe we do eat a lot of icecream!! We like it anyway. Again I will send my students over. What happened to the quiz? There, then disappears! I am going quiz mad, had huge trouble trying to get the one I did to load on our blog.

    1. John Miller says:

      Hi Miss T!

We’ve had trouble with it too. It is a love-hate relationship so far. I love the idea and would like to use it more, but it appears that the site needs to work out some bugs.

  13. Miss T says:

Great quiz, but I didn’t do very well!! Must see if my students can do any better!

  14. Mr Wood says:

I loved your quiz, it made me realise I need to learn more about your state.
